"A personal aside:  Many years ago, when we were raising funds to build a humane shelter in a county that had an abysmal record of maltreatment to companion animals, we received three $1 bills in an envelope from an elderly woman who desperately wanted to see a humane shelter built.  That donation touched me more than the quite large check we received from a very wealthy individual in the community.  Those three dollars probably cost that wonderful little lady her next decent meal; if only there were more people like her!  A contribution in any amount, if you are willing and able to help Duck Haven, would be greatly appreciated.  What an absolutely wonderful charity:
Please pass this message along to anyone who also might be willing to donate."

Support Needed For Florida Sanctuary!

Darlynn's Darlins Piggy Heights Potbelly Pig Rescue & Animal Sanctuary in Lake Wales, Florida recently experienced a devastating fire, resulting in the death of three pigs, two cats, a rabbit, and one cockatiel.

For the past ten years, Darlynn Czerner and Butch Martin have been taking in abused, unwanted or abandoned pigs, as well as dogs, cats, goats, rabbits, and chickens.  A non-profit organization, Darlynn's Darlins, operates on the money from Darlynn's job as a bus driver,  Butch's construction job,  and donations.

The couple is left with no home, few possessions and little money, but they're not concerned about themselves; they're worried about the 110 pigs and other animals who lived through the smoke and flames. Top priority has been getting the animals situated and being able to feed and care for them while working and having to live away from the property.

Click here to read more about the fire.

Please help! Any support or contributions you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Visit www.darlynnsdarlins.org to make an online donation or e-mail Darlynn at darlynn@darlynnsdarlins.org.

Let's stick together in helping the animals!

Please donate to Feline Friends, in Deerfield Beach.

Feline Friends is an all-volunteer shelter, funded solely by private donations and lovingly tended to by animal devotees. Their cushion funds were stolen by someone they had hired as a grant writer.  How low can you go – stealing from a charity.

Foster Homes Needed for Dachsunds

In conjunction with our Miami Dachshund Meetup group, we are in the process of organizing a Miami branch of Dachshund Rescue of North America (DRNA.ORG). Dachshunds and Dachshund-mixes (excellent condo dogs!) are being given up and lost everyday in Miami where the shelters have no capacity to keep them.  The single most important step needed to save these and other dogs is to develop foster homes that can provide loving, safe havens for them while their stories are told through our national website and we find them long-term homes.  Can you help me in anyway get the world out?  Persons who might consider fostering dogs can reach me either by e-mail -- jperkin@miamidade.gov (preferred) or by phone at 305-673-0360.  Thank you.

Help Shut Down this Local (south Florida) Puppy Mill Front Group

For years, the Wizard of Claws in Pembroke Pines, Florida, has deceived hundreds of customers by selling very unhealthy puppies. Recently, Florida’s Attorney General filed suit in an effort to permanently shut down this pet store for its hundreds of violations of Florida’s Unfair and Deceptive Practices Act.

If you have purchased a puppy from the Wizard of Claws, please help by filling out the form at this link:   http://www.stoppuppymills.org/forms/wizard_information.html

Help Get Dogs Allowed on the Beach at Shell Island

Bay Families with Dogs, Inc., is a Panama City-based grassroots organization that advocates for outdoor recreation opportunities for dogs and their people to enjoy together. If you aren't real familiar with Florida, you may not know the Panama City area is one of the least pet-friendly areas in the state. So this group is working against a tide of that sentiment to establish just a few pets-OK locations and events.

The group wants to provide a large number of signed petitions to the state, asking that families and their furry companions be permitted to continue enjoying a small portion of a lovely beach on Shell Island.

YOU AND THOSE YOU KNOW CAN HELP by signing the online petition - it will only take a quick moment, you can sign even if you don't live in Florida, and it would help this fine group tremendously, not to mention all the doggies just wanting a fun, wet romping with their humans once in a while!

For more information about the group and the link to sign the petition, go to http://www.bayfwd.org/

After you sign the petition, please help pass the word further by sending this letter on to other pet-friendly people in your address book. Any help you can provide this good cause is greatly appreciated!
